[INTRODUCTION]

[INTRODUCTION]

Manufacturing Compliance is my senior capstone project at Arizona State University. The goal of the project is to call attention to a specific social issue and create an exhibit for it. I started by doing research into the chilling effect, the way surveillance changes behavior even when no one is actively watching, but it grew into something much bigger than I expected. The further I went, the more I uncovered. What I found was a surveillance infrastructure most people have never heard of, operating at a scale most people would find hard to believe. This project became about making all the complexities digestible.

[THE EXHIBIT]

[THE EXHIBIT]

The physical exhibit is an 8x4 foot panel with a 16 inch wing, designed to function as a standalone experience. The main panel walks through how personal data flows from private companies into government hands, and presents the evidence for unequal targeting and the chilling effect. Everything on the exhibit is sourced, and every statistic has a primary document behind it. I also included camera covers for viewers to put on their laptop/phone, as well as a fake camera to make people question whether they were actually being watched or not.

[THE WEBSITE]

[THE WEBSITE]

The companion website extends the exhibit into a format that allows for much more information and interactivity. With the physical exhibit, there was a lot of information I wanted to put on there but had to omit due to the lack of space. With the website I was able to expand more into the subject, while also including some extra interactivity to make sense of all of this fragmented data. This website also has a section dedicated to my senior experience, and all the projects that led up to my capstone.

[THE PROCESS]

[THE PROCESS]

There was a big learning curve for designing at a larger scale, and I had a lot of issues trying to fit all of my research down into digestible chunks. There was also the matter of recreating my design in real life. I mostly used laser-cut wood panels to create the piece for my exhibit, with some inset red acrylic text for the headings and string to connect the nodes together on the data web. I spent many nights working until 3AM in the days leading up to the exhibition, but it was worth it as setting up went off without a hitch.
